Ski Magazine: 2010-11 Resort Rankings
10/01/2010
#21 Big Sky, Montana
By itself, Big Sky hosts some of the best skiing in America: long, jetway groomers; the hollow-stomach steeps of Lone Peak; wraparound mountain scenery that induces neck strain; and cotton-candy powder that lasts for days. But with the Lone Peak Pass, including adjoining Moonlight Basin and its stunning North Summit Snowfields and Headwaters Bowl for 5,500 total acres, the place flat-out rules. “One of my favorite areas in the U.S.” attests more than one reader. “Amazing terrain” has always been Big Sky’s strong suit, and it just gets better with ongoing glading, regular lift improvements and “no liftlines—no crowds.”

Powder: The Big Lie
12/10/2008
Before Moonlight transformed from a real estate development in the 1990s to a ski resort in 2003, much of the north side of Lone Mountain, including the North Summit Snowfield, was inaccessible. For more than 30 years—including two during an ugly lawsuit between Big Sky and Moonlight—Big Sky skiers only ogled the expanse of bowls and couloirs from behind ropes. During the first two years of Moonlight’s operation, skiers holding a Moonlight ticket could hike 45 minutes to the steep north-facing cirque of Lone Mountain—now known as the Headwaters—but it wasn’t lift accessible until 2005.

Big Sky/Moonlight Basin,
Montana
The term “big mountain” is thrown around a
lot these days, supposedly referring to alpine
zones where conditions are steep, wild and
consequential. It’s true that many resorts in
America have such terrain, but few compare
in that regard to neighboring ski areas Big
Sky and Moonlight Basin.

The Mountain Culture: Moonlight Basin Headwaters Race 2008
05/07/2008
That was where I was at when I learned that Moonlight Basin was going to put on their 3RD annual Headwaters Race, a 1000ft time trial and a judged freeskiing competition. I had won this race once and placed second another time, so I was fond of this race. However, with the meager amount of training I had done this winter I was not mentally up for the challenge. This may sound lame, but I was reluctant to enter if I didn’t have a chance to win. So I resolved to not enter and finish out the season leisurely powder skiing. That was until my wife secretly registered me for the race. I learned a week before the competition that I was signed up, and I either race or forfeit my entry fee.

First Tracks!!: Moonlight Basin's Sponsorship of Ski Bus from Bozeman Aids Environment
02/23/2008
Moonlight Basin’s and Skyline’s partnership to sponsor the Skyline Link service between Bozeman and Big Sky eliminated the equivalent of 1,960 one-way trips through the Canyon in December 2007, or about 27 auto trips across America, officials of the Montana ski resort indicate. The free Skyline Link served more than 6,500 riders that month, 60% of whom said they opted not to drive their personal car. This helped to save more than 19 tons of CO2 emissions, officials assert.

TheStreet.com - Ski in Montana's Unspoiled Beauty
01/17/2008
If the thought of standing all alone looking down at a 4,350-foot vertical drop covered in fresh powder is appealing, it's worth the trek to Big Sky, in the southwest corner of Montana.
At the center of the community is Lone Mountain, an 11,166-foot peak that anchors 5,300 acres of skiable terrain and the modest tally of about 5,500 skiers daily during the peak season: roughly one per acre. It's not unusual to be halfway down the mountain, stop, turn around, and not see another soul.

SmarterTravel.com - Fun in the snow in Montana

Big Sky and neighboring Moonlight Basin offer the "biggest skiing in America"—5,512 acres with the Big Sky Resort-Moonlight Basin Interconnect that joins the two adjacent ski areas. The terrain is guaranteed to satisfy every skier and snowboarder in your family, whether they want the steeps and deeps (like my kids); long, pristine groomers where, even on busy days, you might not see another soul (my pick); or wide, gentle runs ideal for beginners. "My son doesn't want to leave," said Los Angeles-based Sandy Itkoff, a guest at Moonlight Basin.

Forbes - Just The Ticket
10/30/2006
On the mountain's north side was Moonlight Basin, a real-estate-development-turned-ski-lodge in 2003. Like most of the other skiers and boarders on this tram, I'd been happily skiing between the two. The Big Sky-- Moonlight Basin combo offers 5,512 acres of terrain, a number that nudges 223 boastful acres ahead of Vail's 5,289 to make it the largest in America. And it's why my tram-mates were so jazzed about accessing the gnarliest in-bounds terrain this side of the Alps.

New York Times - At Home on the Slopes

Moonlight Basin has sought to preserve open space and protect wildlife corridors. Building sites in the 20-acre parcels in the Ulerys Lake and Timber Range developments are limited to two acres.
Yellowstone National Park has world-class fly-fishing on the Gallatin River (where scenes from “A River Runs Through It” were shot) and the Madison River, and there is stellar hiking in the Spanish Peaks. The full-time population of Big Sky hovers around 1,500, so certain amenities can be scarce.

New York Times - One Mountain, Undivided
01/20/2006
Skiers this winter who buy the new Lone Peak Pass can make turns on an astonishing 5,300 acres of terrain across both resorts - the most you can ride in the United States without clicking out of your bindings. (The runner-up, Vail, boasts 5,289 acres.) The combined skiing isn't just wide, it's also tall: 4,350 vertical feet. In North America only Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia, and Snowmass, Colo., offer more top-to-bottom skiing. The arrangement harkens to those European ski networks like the Italian Dolomites or the French Trois Vallées, in which skiers move seamlessly across several different areas, and sometimes even national borders, on unified lift passes. In this nation, only Alta/Snowbird and Solitude/Brighton, all in Utah, have similar arrangements.
